A feminist approach to litigation and legal advocacy internationally

What can we learn from lawyers in different countries and jurisdictions about their strategies to tackle male violence against women?

Join us for the first hybrid International Feminist Legal Network event. During the event we will discuss local, regional, national and international approaches on issues such as:

  • Women who kill their violent partners: Incorporating an understanding of domestic abuse into defences for women accused of murdering their abusers.

  • Femicide, honour-killing and suicide arising from domestic violence: How strategic litigation can be deployed to strengthen standards at the international level, and also impact domestic processes, institutions and communities.

  • Silencing of victims by perpetrators using the law: criminalisation and civil remedies such as defamation: On a constitutional challenge on criminalising victims who name perpetrators of sexual offences before they plead to the charges and challenging the use of civil remedies by perpetrators to silence victims, through defamation, protection orders, interdicts etc.

  • Gender based violence framed as torture: Advocating for systemic gender-based violence to be defined as torture, in line with evolving international standards. Given that torture carries a special stigma, this might prod reluctant States to address violence against women and girls more decisively, including through robust legislation; training of law enforcement officers and judges; victim and witness protection and the provision of reparations to survivors

  • Human trafficking/modern slavery, sexual exploitation and associated gendered abuse and consequences

  • Using litigation as a tool for change

  • The impact of strategic litigation and how to enhance it

Lawyers from around the world will attend in person or online including from the Philippines, South Africa, United States and elsewhere.
